This is a life you can't deny yourself.Personally, she had been disturbed at Ron’s sudden disappearance. They had been thrown backwards in time, but it seems that he had been thrown to some other dimension. The name Lavender Brown struck a chord in her and she just had to roll her eyes in disgust. ”Good thing.” she mumbled. She had tried hard not care, but she couldn’t help herself. But Snape’s attitude was proving to be a good distraction from her worrying. She had to look at Harry in surprise. He was taking all this ‘reading’ stuff pretty well from his younger potions professor. This time was doing strange, strange things. To all of them.
For now, she had to ignore the idea of Ron and where the hell he might be. She had more important things to worry about. And if Severus suggested that she forget the logic for now, then she had no other choice. If this was going to work, she had to bend a little bit. She watched carefully as stacks of parchments neatly assorted themselves in front of each of them. Hermione picked up her copy and flipped through it, glancing at the pages before finding the page that Snape had mentioned. She had to smile at Harry a bit as he ‘hmmed’ at the information, not sure if he was actually reading the page or not.
The page that Snape had entailed looked vicious, but she had to keep the idea in her head that it would help them somehow. She was lost in the first paragraph of text when Harry spoke about other people. She looked up at him and only glanced at Snape, before looking back down, not really wanting to know if he had or not. She had no idea whether Snape would have run into himself or not, but she didn’t want to imagine what things they would talk about together. Clearing her throat, she set the packet of parchment down in front of her. ”Which do you suggest we read over first?” she asked.

Lily adjusted her bookbag once more as she sprinted through the corridors, anxious to get to the library for her tutoring session. Professor Slughorn had pulled her to the side today and suggested she help a few students in the lower grades with their schoolwork, as he wasn't sure how they would manage under Severus' care alone. She had quickly agreed for several reasons. The first: The students she would be helping Sev tutor included her son. The second: she would be tutoring with Sev, and she hadn't had the chance to really speak with him for awhile, and hoped to speak with him about The Tattler's latest edition.
Lily growled in irritation as she passed a few girls in her year in possession of said "newspaper", burning the pages with a wave of her wand when one of the girls decided to make a smart remark about the article involving she and Severus. Despite the fact that what the article said was true, that didn't mean Lily wanted everyone in the bloody school to know about it.
Now, don't get Lily wrong, she would never take back the kiss; she only wished that they had been somewhere more private, or had possibly been able to spot whoever wrote the blasted article and obliviate them before they got to a quill and parchment. Life was already complicated enough as it was, there was no need to add a blasted piece of paper that boasted about as if it deserved to be called "investigative journalism". The young Gryffindor sighed as she rounded a corner, wishing that for once, people could mind their own business and let private matters stay that way...private.
Lily slowed her pace as she neared the Library, taking a few deep, calming breaths as she stopped just outside the entryway. This would be the first time since their kiss that she and Sev would really be around each other; they hadn't really had much time to be around one another, even in front of others. On top of that, Lily was no closer to really knowing how she felt about Severus' advance. Sure, she loved him - he was her best friend, after all - but it was all so sudden. It was a sad truth, but a truth nonetheless. She had only recently returned from the side of herself that had forced her to put thoughts of her best friend behind her, the side that had long buried the old feelings of attraction - not to his appearance, though she could see nothing wrong with it personally, but his mind and his heart - and put in place feelings of anger and hurt instead. Was she really ready for anything more than friendship at this point?
Shaking away those thoughts, she made her way into the Library, smiling at the librarian as she did so. After a quick glance about the room, she caught sight of the trio she was looking for. Smirking, Lily walked towards them silently, making no sound as she made her way behind Severus' back. Shaking her head towards her son and the bushy-haired girl beside him, she lifted a finger to her lips to convey their need to remain silent. Then, quickly, Lily raised her hands to cover Sev's eyes and said, "Severus, how can you instruct these talented students to read a book when you can't even see the words on the page yourself?"

Severus glanced up very queryingly when Potter called him 'professor'. He wasn't stupid--he could connect a few pieces of information without much effort. And if this boy was from the future, he wondered what sort of professor he was accustomed to Severus being. Hope clung to him, suggesting it could have been Defense Against the Dark Arts. Sure an older Lupin and Black were tag teaming it, (apparently they didn't have the skill to teach separately), right now, but there was no older version of himself running about. He could understand there perhaps being a 'fill-in' for himself if he didn't arrive in the past.
"I can't say that I have," he replied simply. He didn't make an effort to go out of his way to speak to people, and from what he saw the new students and teachers who joined them from the future were not worth knowing. Lucius' boy was a spoiled punk, Frank's was moronic, and the current behaviors--that is to say, the teenage behaviors--of their Defense Duo spoke volumes for them. There was no one to meet.
Severus opened his mouth to begin telling them about the page he'd sent them to when Hermione, apparently much further behind them, spoke up, asking what they were to be covering. He rolled his eyes: how ironic that the person who was tagging along was paying more attention than the person this study time was for.
"Listen, Grange," "Granger," he heard Potter correct him from his left side. "Yes, yes, Granger," he continued, shaking his head as if that didn't really matter, "you're the one who asked for my help. If you're not going to pay attention, don't waste my time. There are a million other things I could and would rather be doing than this. So if you want, you can find where we are and follow along, or you can leave. The choice is yours."
His voice never raised, and he never lost his calm countenance as he told her off. "Now then, you more than likely have seen devices similar to these in Zonko's. These are considerably more potent than the ones you'd find in Zonko's, so don't treat them like toys." His disclaimer was small, but necessary, especially with who one of their fathers was. "These devices are small, about the size of a marble, and appear very delicate. However, with the proper enchantments they will not actually break or detonate, however you prefer to phrase it, until the user is ready for it to and then drops or tosses it."
"Now it may seem strange that I am basically teaching you to carry a small arsenal of weapons on your person, but from what I have heard, having magical items such as these available is... well, rather essential for you both," he said, glancing between them. Professor Slughorn told him about some of the stories he'd heard about these students, having brushes with death at least once a year. When he heard they wanted to learn how to handle situations that could arise before them, he was rather surprised to hear how often they came up before. Apparently they did well enough already but were wary of relying on luck any longer. What would come perhaps as a disappointment to Granger is that luck, even with more knowledge and powerful magical objects, still played heavily on times they were now planning to deal with.
"Now, the-" his eyes were suddenly obstructed by another person's hands, and although he wasn't even paying attention to what was going on outside of his small study group, he knew it was Lily before she'd even put her hands over his eyes. "Well, Lily, I suppose it's fortunate I've more than proficiently memorized these books, then. However, I'm sure it would be considerably easier for me to instruct them if your hands," he said, moving them away from his face, "weren't in the way."
He wasn't sure why she was here--perhaps she was picking up a book for classwork--but he was lucky his emotions were so easy to contain. Otherwise his face would have been red, he'd be stumbling over his words, and he'd perhaps be fleeing the scene all together. His calm face and mannerisms did not betray the confusion and wonder about what had happened between he and Lily, his worry about what she was thinking about him, about what he'd done. He luckily managed to contain all of this as he spoke, acting as though nothing happened--although he supposed Lily knew better. She always seemed to know when he was stewing about something unlike other people around him.
"So, I'm assuming this all makes sense so far, yes? Is there any particular type you'd like to create first?"

Harry wasn't surprised that Snape wasn't saying much about meeting other people--as if he was a real socialite before. He said so little, though! He'd only asked who he met that was interesting, which with Snape he supposed cut out a lot of people, and he now wished he'd simply asked who he met in general. His curiosity, although the information wasn't exactly essential, was now piqued. He didn't push the idea, though, because Snape was now moving right along, and it seemed was digging into Hermione.
"Grange-" "Granger," he corrected without thinking twice. The teen corrected himself after this, and continued to heckle her for not paying attention. Since when did this happen? He blushed, his own shock and confusion keeping him from saying anything. How had he and Hermione swapped places today? He nodded when Snape talked about the actual objects they'd be making, face unsmiling and still shocked until he caught sight of his mother sneaking up behind Snape.
He only let his smile really show when she'd put her hands around his eyes, a successful sneaking, though a memory stirred when he saw the two of them together. The Tattler. His stomach dropped a little, but his joy in seeing Lily was too great to let it show. "Hey Lily! How's it going?" he asked eagerly. He hadn't expected to see her here!
He looked across the table at Hermione as Severus, eyes now unobstructed, posed a question to them. "Anything in particular you want to learn Hermione? I'm partial to the one that's like a flashbang myself..." he said thoughtfully, working with Muggle weaponry terms easily despite never using them himself. His cousin's obsession with destruction, he figured, must have had an effect on Harry, and it was most likely why Harry gravitated towards one that would stun and confuse, not one that did real physical harm. Dudley would have tried to find the one that blew people to bits. words: 334 tag: Hermione, Severus, and Lily

This is a life you can't deny yourself.Hermione was actually starting to get rather annoyed with Snape, and seeing as he wasn't her professor at the moment, she was thinking of punching him in the face as well. Another one to add to her list. She glared at Severus before she turned her attention onto Harry. He wasn't annoying her, but the fact that he was getting 'buddy-buddy' with his future professor was enough to make her scream. "Listen, Snape, I asked you to help us, not for you to insult us. Either you actually start teaching us something, or take your slimy arse out of the library." she snapped. She was done. Hermione was perfectly capable to teach herself, she had really only wanted the extra help for Harry.
She wasn't interested in magical bombs or stupid muggle objects like that. If she wanted she could get some of those herself, but she wanted something that would actually help them against Voldemort. Something useful. That's when Lily decided to come along. Well, this whole thing was turning into some kind of circus, wasn't it? Mumbling to herself, she pushed the stack of papers away from her and charmed a rather large book to her from a shelf and opened it with a huff. She would read, calm down, and perhaps find her own method of teaching Harry something.
In fact, it was a little awkward how Lily and Severus were together. Knowing that she marries James in the future surely couldn't have sparked that kiss, could it? Hermione couldn't be sure, but she did happen to notice how Harry's face lit up when his young mother showed her face. She didn't say anything, but smiled at Lily calmly before glaring at Snape again, making her eyes back down to her book.

Lily grinned as she interrupted her best friend's train of thought, giving the duo before her an innocent, conspiratorial look as she kept his eyes covered. "First rule of defense, kids," she said, "Always be prepared, always be on guard. If you aren't, then you could wind up like Severus here: blind and irritated." "Well, Lily, I suppose it's fortunate I've more than proficiently memorized these books, then. However, I'm sure it would be considerably easier for me to instruct them if your hands," he said, moving them away from his face, "weren't in the way." Lily fought back a blush as he removed her hands from his eyes. The sight of the onyx orbs coupled with the feel of his calloused, potion-stained hands over hers made her wish that Harry and his friend weren't there at the moment. When she realized what she was thinking, she quickly retracted her hands from Severus, turning back to the situation at hand.
Taking in his composed expression, Lily knew that there must have been a million things running through his mind. One look at his eyes told her that. It seemed however, at the moment, that the question in his eyes was pertaining to her reason for being there. Smirking, she said, "Slughorn figured you might need some help; said that my being here would balance out your surly methods," she teased.
Looking away from the boy that had created such a state of inner turmoil for her, Lily took in the sight of her son and his friend. "Hello, Harry," she greeted, walking around the table to give him a short embrace. Pulling away, she glanced at the girl's irritated form and glanced at Harry with a raised brow. "And this is your friend...?" She trailed off suggestively, not really remembering what the girl's name was, let alone if Harry had even told her his best friend's name. She seemed a bit uptight at the moment; or, at least, extremely irritated. Then again, if Lily's assumption as to the source of the young bushy-haired girl's annoyance was correct, Severus had that effect on people. Shrugging, she reached forward and held her hand out to the girl. "Lily Evans," the Gryffindor Prefect greeted, smiling warmly at her. After all, any friend of her son's should be an indirect second-child of hers, right?

Severus rolled his eyes. "No, actually, I'm not insulting you, you're just not paying attention. It's rather pointless to request instruction and not even listen to it, is it not?" The girl was utterly moronic for all of her skills in class, and he wondered how she'd made it this far in life and managed to keep any friends at all. Then again, he knew he wasn't one to judge others for their capacity to keep friendship.
"Alright then," he replied to Harry, moving right along and diving into the details of the manner in which the thing was created: the potion, the container, the charms that held it all in place, everything. It did't take long to go through all of this, and Lily's comment through the middle--"blind and irritated? Fascinating that I'm always the last to know"--kept the time light at best, amusing at worst.
After instructing them on the potions and charms they'd need to practice--there was no way of brewing in the library without being kicked out--he moved onto other matters. "Now I'm sure one of your biggest concerns here--and perhaps this is your real motivation for asking for assistance," he told Hermione, "is to find a way back to your own time. I must warn you now that it is not only improbable, but more than likely impossible that you will ever return to your own time in any immediate manner."
He continued rubbing some ink from his fingers, a small splotch that occurred earlier as he scribbled down notes without feeling any real reason to continue. It was a glance up at Lily, the person anchored to what little decency he had, that forced him to continue. "Let me explain. All that we know in this time period is that we can place ourselves at a point in time somewhere in the past and work our way, through the natural passage of time, back to the date and time that we've turned back time.
"Muggles have often theorized that the only way to travel through time is forwards--that time must, in essence, always move forward and never backward, but in all the research wizards have done, we have so far found it possible only to move back in time. And, until this point, only for a few hours or a few days at a time--not over a decade." There, he said it. It was most likely the only thing the irritating girl was here for, and whether or not she was happy with the information mattered little to him. She could get up and storm out for all he cared: that would give him time to tend to his own affairs.

Harry smiled and his eyes widened in surprise at Lily's cheeky comment, a chuckle finding its way out of him. "Well, we can't have that, now can we?" Blind an irritated somehow seemed to fit Snape well, especially when he was their professor at Hogwarts. And his surly methods were too well known amongst students of his own generation. Yes, perhaps it was best that Lily was there to keep the peace--especially with Hermione's rising temper.
He didn't want to say it, but Snape had a point. Hermione hadn't been paying attention, and it wasn't like the Slytherin was getting any kind of compensation for this. He was here on his own time, for free, trying to help them. It also seemed entirely out of character for her to be adrift during any sort of educational lecture anyway. He wondered for a moment if Ron wasn't missing, he was just stuck in Hermione's body.
"Ah yeah, that's Hermione," he introduced, allowing his mother to introduce herself to his friend. Although he'd not yet mentioned Hermione to Lily, he'd mentioned Lily to Hermione. His face did fall a bit, though, when Severus began telling them about just how and why they couldn't return to their own time. However, on second thought of the situation, he could find little wrong with it, and quickly came to accept that he may be growing up right alongside his parents. At least they'd be around with him for once, right? And even without them there, if they couldn't get themselves back to the present--or perhaps he should start calling it the 'future', there was nothing to be said about it. He only hoped Hermione would be even half as flexible about it as he was, and a glance her way told him she hadn't lost much of her irritation.
"Well," he said, hoping to diffuse a bad situation before it erupted, "I suppose there's nothing for it then. But there can't be any harm in trying to find a way back, right? If anything, we'll learn something new about magic and maybe help someone else in the future," he said with a shrug, clearly very casual about any magic that didn't involve Quidditch or staying alive in a fight, even if it meant they'd be pioneering something amazing. Right now he wasn't concerned with fame or glory: he just wanted everyone to stop going at each other's throats. words: 409 tag: Hermione, Severus, and Lily
