Katara was so confused. One moment, she was closing the candy shop and about to apparate home, when in just moment, she was standing in the middle of a deserted Hogsmeade. She combed her fingers through her hair and looked around. Opening her purse, she pulled her wand out and apparated back to her flat in the muggle world. The flat was still dark, and her concern rose. “Babe, I’m home,” she called out. She went to turn the lights on, but they didn’t work. “Auguste?” No answer. Maybe he was still out with the girls. Kat had come home early, and they were still out. But she had a weird feeling. Wand still out, the tip lit up and she looked throughout the house. The place was completely empty, like no one lived there at all.
She rubbed her face. No one was here. No one had ever been here. What the hell was going on? She apparated back to Hogsmeade. She wasn’t going to stay in that depressingly empty flat. She went into the Three Broomsticks and got a drink before heading back onto the main road. She knew no one in the village would believe her. She didn’t even know what to believe. She didn’t even know what was going on! Stuffing her wand away in her bag, she took a sip of her butterbeer, and made her way to the school. If anyone was going to know what was going on, it’d be Dumbledore.
She walked up the familiar path to the school and looked up at it. She missed being here. She took a detour to the lake. She needed to get her thoughts straight and maybe see if she could figure out where the hell Auguste and her girls were. Getting closer to the lake, she pulled her shoes off and set them down before slipping her feet into the water. It was nice and cool, perfect to let her clear her head. She rested back on her arms, and stared across the water. This night was not going how she had planned it too.

Lenore had been called in early that morning to Gringotts after they had found a volt located deep within the confines of the wizarding bank, old and rusted and not having been open for centuries. The Goblins had been right to call her in, without her expertise and know-how to safely guide someone into the volt they surely would have had to deal with some pretty nasty curses. She cut it close quite a few times, barely escaping a particularly gruesome curse with only singed eyebrows—easily fixable.
It had taken her the better part of the day, nearly 9 hours stuck in Gringotts with only a half hour break for lunch and bathroom, but she didn’t mind it all that much. Lenore didn’t really have much to go home to so she spent all of her spare time either at work or researching for her work—rarely did she ever ask for time off.
It was nightfall by the time she was through with work for the day and she felt absolutely drained, wanting nothing more than to crawl into bed with a good book and a glass of butterbeer. She paused, if memory served her correctly then she was all out of butterbeer at home and she didn’t feel like picking up the ingredients to brew some at home so she felt that the next best thing would be to stop by a pub on her way home and just have a glass there.
She apparated to Hogsmeade and immediately felt that something was…off. The area was darker than usual, the street lights were either broken or blinking out and there was smoke clouding the air. All in all, she got a very unsettling vibe from the area. Biting her lip, Lenore set off for the Three Broomsticks but took a detour away from the pub when she spotted, out of the corner of her eye, a familiar figure walking in the direction of Hogwarts.
“Maybe she’ll have some answers about what happened here…”
Kat was already a decent distance away when Lenore first started to follow her and it took her an extra five minutes to catch up to her at the lake, feeling a little out of breath from the trek and miserably out of shape [despite her thin physique], Lenore caught her breath before letting a small smile to paint her lips, “Long time no see, huh?”

Katara had so much crap on her mind. She couldn’t stand it. Her Auguste was gone, along with their daughters. She was going through hell at the moment. How could something like this happen? She still couldn’t get over any of it. She was about to lay back on the grass and stare at the sky when she heard someone talk behind her. She froze for a moment, but quickly came out of it. The way the person spoke…they knew Katara. And the voice sounded oddly familiar. She turned and her eyes widened at the girl that was standing behind her. It was Lenore. She hadn’t seen her best friend in ages.
She got up quickly and wrapped her arms around her friend. “Oh Nori! I’ve missed you!” She said, hugging her. She hadn’t seen her since her wedding. Kat stayed in touch with her, of course, but she missed hanging out with Lenore and spending time with her best friend. She missed the time together they used to have when they were in school. “I don’t know what the hell is going on and I don’t know where Auguste and the girls are,” she stated, eyes tearing up. “Do you have any idea?” She asked, pulling back and looking at her friend hopefully.
“All I know is that, I was closing up the store, and I was all set to come home, and then all of a sudden, I feel like I apparated into the village, when I was already there. And on top of that…I went to my flat, and there’s nothing there! Not even a trace of anyone living there. It was like…like it was when we were in school.” She ran her fingers through her hair and sat back down on the ground. “I don’t wanna not see my husband and kids again, Nori.” She sniffled a bit and looked back over the water. This night was just getting worse and worse. The only good thing was that she had Nori by her side.

Lenore was glad that she had at least found a familiar face amongst the confusion, she didn’t like the idea of having to brave all of this on her own. It was true that she and Kat hadn’t seen much of each other since the latter’s wedding but that wasn’t really anyone’s fault—Nori was always working and Kat had a family to take care of now, so it wasn’t like the two women had much time to waste on frivolous visits to each other. They were just too busy, and it was sad really but they made sure to keep in contact, Owling each other and occasionally phone calling each other. But after all this time it felt good to be able to see her best friend again.
She returned the hug and when they pulled apart she frowned, “I wish I knew what was going on.” She bit her lip before offering her friend a reassuring smile, “I’m sure wherever they are they’re safe; Auguste wouldn’t let anything happen to the girls.” The workaholic didn’t know what it was like to have a family or to even have someone to truly worry and care for like Kat did, but she realized that this must have been a traumatic and absolutely terrifying experience for the other woman to be going through and at that moment she wanted nothing more than to comfort her best friend—to hold her and stroke her hair like she used to….
“We’ll find them, don’t worry. However, first we should figure out what’s going on here…I apparated here but during the travel it didn’t feel…right. I don’t know how to explain the sensation but...now that I’m here I feel like something big happened—it’s bizarre and disconcerting…” She felt uneasy about being here, the entire town was eerily quiet and smelled of ash and magical residue. Subconsciously she moved closer to Kat, her brows furrowed in contemplation over what was happening.
