UP UNTIL NOW I HAD SWORN MYSELF THAT I'M CONTENT ( ( W I T H L O N L I N E S S ) )b e c a u s e n o n e o f i t w a s e v e r w o r t h t h e r i s k - - - & & BUT DARLING YOU ARE THE[/i] T H E O N L Y E X C E P T I O N[/center] Jolene scowled at the creature before her, wanting more than anything the ability to not see it. Ever since her encounter with the attack in Hogsmeade village, however, she had been unable to keep herself from acknowledging their existence. There was nothing the young French professor hated more than pointless death, lying a very close second. Ever since that night, Jolene had been plagued with guilt. If only she could have done more, tried to protect the students more thoroughly instead of focusing on the physical destruction to the delapidated buildings. Then again, if she had not helped as best as she could with the buildings, where would the children have been able to hide? How many more would have died if any of the burning buildings had collapsed? To be perfectly honest, she didn't want to know.
The Thestral stared at her mutely, it's eyes calculating. Slowly, hesitantly, Jolene stepped forward, only to cringe when her foot landed on a twig with an audible crunch. The strange, winged creature fled immediately, and she could not help but groan in exasperation. This was the fourth Thestral she had tried to reign in, and again, no such luck. In all her studying of the creatures, she had never truly realized how skittish they could be. She had talked with the gamekeeper, Rubeus Hagrid, about the best way to capture a Thestral. Of course, she didn't use such a harsh word as capture in Hagrid's presence, as he seemed to genuinely care for the creature's well-being. Not that she didn't, of course, she loved all magical creatures. She wouldn't be Hogwart's Care of Magical Creatures professor if she didn't. But that did not change the fact that one of the only magical creatures she never wished to encounter was the Thestral. She knew that Thestrals resided on Hogwarts grounds, were the animals responsible for pulling the carriages from the station to Hogwarts and vice versa, but she never wished to see their true form. It was said by many a witch or wizard that Thestrals could only be seen by people who have seen death, and for that reason, Jolene wished to never discover the true guise of the creature.
Jolene suppressed another exasperated sound as she realized that she had run out of 'bait'. Leaving the poor beasts be for a little while, the young woman decided that she needed more help than she had first anticipated. She knew that Hagrid loved the Thestrals and trained them - he had mentioned it in passing when she was asking him for advice on how to catch them - so she knew that he would be able to help her catch one easily. Merlin knows what she was thinking when she decided to use a Thestral for her next Care of Magical Creatures lesson; it seemed more of a hassle to capture one than it would be to simply have the students read a chapter on them. Then again, Jolene had always believed that auditory and experiential learning was the best way to insure that students paid attention. If she merely had them all read chapters out of a book, there would be no hope of her students retaining enough information - let alone interest - to pass their end-of-term exams. As it was, she found that a lesson dedicated to Thestrals was a relevant one, what with You-Know-Who going around and slaughtering half of the Wizarding World, it helped to know what these creatures looked like, their temperment, and the best course of action when interacting with one. On top of that, she had learned that they were an excellent alternative to brooms and apparating.
Sighing, she stumbled through the forest in an attempt to find a way out and find the beloved gamekeeper. "Hagrid!" Jolene called, tripping over an old tree root, thankfully able to catch herself in time, "Do you have any more raw meat? No matter what I do, the stubborn creatures won't cooperate." At the sound of a snort from one of said 'stubborn creatures', the young professor stated, albeit reluctantly, "I might be in need of your assistance after all, Rubeus."
The thing that she could not understand when it came to Rubeus was what had resulted in his position as gamekeeper. She had learned from one of Hagrid's slip-of-the-tongue moments that he had been expelled from Hogwarts by Professor Dippet when he was 13, only to have Dumbledore convince the now-retired headmaster to allow Hagrid to stay on as gamekeeper. What Hagrid did to deserve such a strict punishment as expulsion, Jolene did not know. Whatever it was, she was sure the gentle man had not done it. He was such a kind person with a warm heart. It was impossible not to believe that he had been nothing but short of an excited - although rather large - schoolboy. Hagrid was dedicated to his job, as well, and respected Dumbledore more than she had seen anyone respect him, as though the current Headmaster were a deity of sorts, rather than simply an old wizard that couldn't bear the thought of seeing such a kind young man thrown out into the streets. To an extent, she even believed that Hagrid might possibly see Dumbledore as the father he'd never had. The poor man had confided in her that his father had died before he had come to Hogwarts, and suspected that Dumbledore had taken him under his wing during his residency in Hogwarts Castle.
Hagrid had not yet responded to her call for assistance, though she knew that she would be out of the forest soon enough. She saw a small opening in the forest, and in the distance just beyond the clearing, the Black Lake. Smiling, she quickened her pace toward the forest's exit, shouting in what her mother would call a 'very un-ladylike manner', "Hagrid! Hagrid! I need some help with the-" Jolene paused as she stumbled out of the forest, trying to catch herself with the first solid thing she encountered - a tree - and failing miserably. With an audible "Oomf!", Jolene found herself sprawled atop someone she would prefer not to run into....

"But Sir! Charlie tried to argue with the headmaster, but knew it was a losing battle. He sighed and nodded, making his exit and his head sunken. He sighed once more as he climbed back down the stairs he had only moments ago returned. Charlie looked around and decided it was time to go and properly introduce himself to his partner. He looked around, scratching his orange hair in thought. He wondered exactly where she would be, but remembered that she was wanting to capture a Thestral for that weeks class or something.
He headed towards the Forbidden Forest, their habitat within these grounds. He looked around and decided to start for Hagrid's hut first to find the specific direction. He had previously met Hagrid when he accepted the invitation. The fact was, he was one of the many people that had been sucked into the past, so he knew his mother would be prancing around these halls somewhere, himself and brothers not even thought of yet. He smiled and knew that he would be kept here until this whole mess had been sorted out. "Hey Hagrid, Have you seen Jolene?" he asked, and just watched as Hagrid pointed to the initial direction. Charlie just nodded, his hands in his pockets. He was feeling slightly awkward, but he continued anyway. He and Jolene weren't exactly on a first name basis, so he didn't push her, not that he really minded.
He got to the edge of the forest and saw a bouncing blonde coming his way, just as he was about to greet her, he was suddenly bombarded, and soon felt the dirt beneath his orange haired head. He opened his eyes and looked down to the Professor. "You know, I know I'm all irresistible and such but I prefer to take things slow. You know, maybe a exchange names first?" He said. He smiled and lifted her off from him, getting himself and her up easily. He looked at her and noticed at how pretty she actually was. "Charlie" He said, holding out his hand to her, though by her expression, he felt as if were a little unwanted here.
He took his hand back and put it behind his head, scratching it in this awkward moment. "You look as if you need some help, mind if I help you? Or are you just fine, not that when you came bounding out here you were fine..." He was rambling but he didn't care, she got his point.

She tried to resist the urge to scowl at the man, but it was useless. She hadn't been formally introduced to him, but she had seen him before, had been informed who he was. At first she had found him attractive - the giant matt of ginger hair, those gorgeous blue eyes, that face - until she found out what teaching position he was occupying. Apparently, Dumbledore had thought it more prudent to employ more than one Professor for a particular class. Professor Francis was, officially, Jolene's partner, her co-professor for Care of Magical Creatures class. This bit of news, followed by the man's natural self-confidence, had ruined her early opinion of him immediately. This was her job, after all; she would be damned if she let some snot-nosed ginger waltz in and steal it from her. "You know, I know I'm all irresistible and such but I prefer to take things slow. You know, maybe exchange names first?" The man said smiling as he lifted her off of him and helping her off the ground. Brushing herself off, she grudgingly admitted to herself that the boy at least had some manners. Brushing a stray of blonde hair away from her now dark eyes - a sign that she was irritated - the metamorphmagus replied, "All it takes for you is a name? Merlin's beard, you must have slept through half of England by now." "Charlie," he introduced himself, holding out his hand to her. Jolene merely stared at it as though it were something that needed a wash; hell, for all she knew, it probably did. He took his hand back and put it behind his head, scratching it in this awkward moment. Jolene resisted the urge to smirk at the man's unease. This was too easy; he'd be gone within the week.
"You look as if you need some help, mind if I help you? Or are you just fine, not that when you came bounding out here you were fine..." Jolene's eyes flashed yellow in amusement, and the woman couldn't deny that she enjoyed the man's rambling more than she let on. Shaking her head at him, she replied, "I was actually looking for Hagrid to help me. Thanks for the offer though. It's appreciated." The sarcasm in her voice was palpable, the silent dismissal louder than any civil word spoken between the two in a matter of minutes.

He looked her up an down. He'd seen her around and found attracted to her, but he didn't dare voice the opinion. He couldn't get close to anyone from this era, after all, he may as well stuff up the fabric of time and universe. He shook his head of all his thoughts and smiled. "Well you see, we are partners now, and I think we should be doing this together. Since you know, we are partners." He said, allowing his words to put emphasis on the word 'partners' He just wanted a reaction of course. Dumbledore had told him that she didn't like the fact that there were now two people teaching the same class. Neither did he, but he'd make the most of it now.
He walked past her and to the edge of the forest. "Hurry along now. It's not like there gonna come out on their own. And yes, I can see them. I've seen many people die from my previous studies on dragons. Maybe I'll bring one in one day, just a baby of course." He explained. He didn't like the sarcasm in her voice so he used his own. He didn't wait for her, he could do this all on his own, without the bait. He knew she used it because he could smell the raw meat on her. As he went through deeper, hearing the crunch on twigs beneath his footsteps. "Well actually, to concur to your previous statement, Not half of England, I was in Romania. So maybe half of Romania. I have to at least know the girls name so that if anything happens, I know who to thank..." He said, his voice in a tease.
He looked around carefully until a he saw a pack. He didn't waltz right up to them because he didn't want to provoke them. He pulled out his pocket knife and cut his finger. It didn't hurt, since of course he had had a lot worse. He watched as one lifted it's head and sniffed around, drawing nearer and nearer to him. He undid a leach sort of rope and waited till it edged near enough where he could clip it around the Thestrals neck, but once it saw the leach, it bounded back. Charlie sighed. They were a lot easier to catch when he was at school back in the future sort of thing.
He turned to face Jolene. "Almost" He exclaimed, a smile on his face.

Despite the obvious attraction she felt for Mr. Francis, he was still the metamorphmagus' colleague. An unwelcome colleague, she reminded herself. "Well you see, we are partners now, and I think we should be doing this together. Since you know, we are partners." He replied, his emphasis on the word 'partners' making it extremely hard for Jolene not to roll her eyes. "Partners my arse," she muttered, mentally cringing and hoping he hadn't heard her accented comment. Her mother had scolded her time and time again for her 'unladylike' behaviors being unacceptable, and a part of her regretted using such language in front of her new 'partner'.
He walked past her and to the edge of the forest, leaving Jolene standing behind, staring at him in shock and outrage. "Hurry along now. It's not like there gonna come out on their own. And yes, I can see them. I've seen many people die from my previous studies on dragons. Maybe I'll bring one in one day, just a baby of course." The metamorphmagus' eyes narrowed. How dare he? Already strutting about and treating her as if she didn't know what she was doing. Last she checked, he was the one helping her - though she didn't feel that she needed it - not the other way around. Scowling, she replied sarcastically, "Of course, feel welcome to bring a baby dragon to class any time. I'm sure teenagers are mature enough to handle a baby dragon without getting their fingers singed off as a result of trying to pet it. After all, you know that's what the children will do; it's a simple reaction to seeing a tiny version of any ferocious animal. But you know that, of course. How could you not? Dragon Boy hero that you are, and whatnot."
Jolene smirked as they travelled deeper into the dark wood. Let's see just how good of a Thestral catcher Dragon Boy here thinks he is, she thought smugly. "Well actually, to concur to your previous statement, Not half of England, I was in Romania. So maybe half of Romania. I have to at least know the girls name so that if anything happens, I know who to thank..." He said, his voice in a tease. The CoMC teacher snorted in amusement and astonishment. "Are you sure you didn't sleep with all of the women in Romania? After all, that country is significantly smaller than England, so I would imagine the difference in population size would be significant," she replied, a smirk pulling at the edges of her lips. The smirk froze as she realized that she was flirting with this man, something she could not afford at the moment...even if the idea was appealing...
Jolene watched curiously as she watched Francis cut his finger before a pack of Thestrals, brows furrowing in curiousity as one of the Thestrals lifted its head and slowly approached. She was unsure as to whether his approach would work or not, but it was still amusing and somewhat awe-inspiring to watch. He undid a leach sort of rope and waited till the Thestral - male, by the looks of him - edged near enough where he could clip it around the thing's neck, but once it saw the leach, it bounded back. Jolene smirked at her colleague's admittedly appealing backside as he sighed, an amused chuckle escaping her as he turned to face her once more. "Almost," he exclaimed, a smile on his face. Shaking her head, Jolene replied, "That one's a male; much harder to catch. From my experience so far, I would suggest going for a young female, or a foal. A bit more skiddish, but gentler once you get a hold of them. At least, that's what Hagrid's told me," she added, looking towards the forest exit once more, "That's why I was looking for him; he has the most experience with Thestrals, and they recognize him. He absolutely loves the creatures." She smiled as she thought of Hagrid; such a sweet man, so caring and gentle when it came to witches and wizards, and even more so towards magical creatures. He was an avid animal enthusiast, and had quickly turned into one of her favorite colleagues. He was the elder brother she'd never had.

Charlie snorted at her. As he looked her, he sneakily looked at her whole figure. What a fine woman she was. He shook his head, it was obvious she didn't feel the same way, and he always liked a challenge. He smiled once more and looked at her, her comment about the baby dragon. "Haven't you read the whole seventh year required book? The last chapter is about Dragons, and I thought that seventeen year old's would be mature enough to realize the dangers of such creatures, big or small. I'm sure Hagrid would like to study one, he's the type of man to like unusual creatures..." Charlie said this, his voice was serious but also teased that she hadn't read any further.
As he continued on his way, he laughed at her size difference. "Don't worry, it wasn't that many, I should know, I only go after those I see as a challenge. It's a real turn on..." He looked back at her and winked. He was only being a smart ass, trying to gain the attention he wanted. He couldn't understand why she wouldn't loosen up, have a little fun.
He shrugged his shoulders, raising his good hand and scratching the back of his head. "Lets try again shall we? Can you spot a female? I don't think a foel would co-operate as much, plus I think Hagrid would say it was animal cruelty. Even if it were only for a lesson or two." He said, taking the knife and once more, cutting a gash into his hand. Pain didn't bother him the least anymore. As he held his hand out, once more, another Thestral came out slowly. He watched as it was unsure of how to react. He was surprised that she herself could see them, but he guessed that would be a question for later.
He looked around and watched as it too looked at the others. It came forward and once more, Charlie urged the leach towards it. It didn't scurry away, but instead kept creeping closer. He began to think he had it, and if he caught it, maybe it would place a good impression on her. He took step forward hearing a large crack underneath his foot and he silently cursed himself. He watched as it took a step back, but continued forward after a bit. He clicked the leach around its neck and smiled at her. Victory!
"Well then. I was going to ask before, how can you see such magnificent creatures?" His voice soft and sincere. She must have had a touch time dealing with it, and he wouldn't push if she didn't want to answer.
