When marimba rhythms start to play dance with me, make me sway
Like a flower bending in the breeze bend with me, sway with ease
When we dance you have a way with me stay with me, sway with me
Kate tried her best to stop fidgeting with her dress but, she just felt so out of her element that she couldn’t help but tug gently at the lace. Gazing into the mirror in her dorm, Kate used her wand to tie her hair up into an elegant, twisted bun. She tucked a small red rose into the side of it to add a pop of color to her neutral palate. A cream colored gown with black lace trimming about the middle and black pumps needed a little something to spice it up. She’d painted her finger nails the same deep crimson color but left her make-up simple. A little gold eye shadow to make her green eyes pop and a light pink lip gloss. She smoothed the black fabric around her waist, took a deep breath and began the walk from Gryffindor tower to the Great Hall.
Her stilettos clicked against the stone as she carefully made her way down the seven floors of stairs. Her mask was held in one hand while the other gripped the railing. It had been a few years since she attended a ball such as this. Or rather it would be about thirty before she attended it. She tried not to think about the time difference it made her head spin. The last Yule Ball had been quite the experience. She was a fourth year at the time and had gotten ready with six other eager Gryffindors prior to the dance. This time she’d done it all by herself. Kate had made friends in this era but, very few of them were girls. Not to mention she wasn’t exactly the queen of fashion and didn’t feel like dealing with a group of girls she didn’t know very well staring at her while she applied her make up and fidgeted… a lot.
As she reached the ground floor, Kate slipped her mask over her eyes. The glimmering gold mask was elegantly designed with etched leafing, sparkling crystals, and lace. The color brought out the flecks of gold in her green eyes and although she couldn’t see herself, she felt beautiful. She wasn’t convinced that it hid her identity but, very few people knew her in this era anyway. Kate turned the corner and made her way down the final flight of stairs. Her head was slightly tilted as she walked giving her an air of sophistication.
Making her way through the tall wooden doors of the Great Hall, Kate couldn’t help but feel minute in comparison to her surroundings. The hall had always been quite large (hence the name) but, it had been enchanted in such a way that it appeared to have doubled if not tripled in size. Long tables stacked with gold plates and towers of food lined the sides of the hall while giant fountains and thick green pine trees decorated the spaces in between. There was a large open section in the middle in which couples had already gathered to dance. Traditionally, the ball began with formal dances and then later in the evening when the professors had had several drinks there was a slight change in style.
Kate slowly circled around the room looking for someone, anyone that she recognized. After several minutes of fruitless venturing she took a glass of what appeared to be champagne off of one of the trays and found a nice little niche by a fountain to watch the couples dance.
