Alex needed a little time to himself, after bidding a group of friends goodbye in the common room and telling them he’d see them later on at dinner, he ventured away from Gryffindor Tower and through the chilly corridors. He had no specific destination in mind, he usually didn’t and just let his feet guide him to wherever he would end up. His hands were shoved deep in his pant pockets, his chin dipped to his neck and hidden beneath his woolen Gryffindor scarf—all in all he looked quite contemplative, not even taking notice to the rest of the world around him. People who saw him when he was in this state would often crack some sort of joke, ‘You thinkin’ again, Alex? Don’t hurt yourself, mate.’ or something along those lines. To the public, Alex was one of those guys that you turned to when you needed some serious cheering up—he was spontaneous and often over exaggerated things to the point of hilarity.
The chilly bite of the autumn air was what brought him back to his senses and only then did he realize that he’d wound up outside of the castle. Luckily this time he was well prepared for the cold, having tossed on his favorite grey hoodie and wrapped his scarf around his neck before leaving the castle. He didn’t want a repeat of the last time he had come outside ill-prepared for the weather, he’d frozen his balls off! Though, not literally of course. Alex shook his head at the thought, he’d be in a sorry state if that had happened.
“Hm? Now who in their right mind would be out here in this cold?” He mused, more to himself than anyone else, when he caught sight of a lone figure a ways away from him, facing the Whomping Willow. “Oh, right. I would be…” He chuckled before striding forwards to see whether the girl was alright or not, he wasn’t accustomed to coming across girls all by themselves—wasn’t it a rule somewhere that they had to travel in packs?
She heard him coming before he even had the decency to announce his presence and he mentally cursed himself to seeming like a creep, sneaking up on her like that. That definitely wasn’t how he wanted to make a first impression.
“I’m sorry, I…” Alex paused, his lips curving into a frown and his brows furrowing in contemplation—was she crying? He knew it was really none of his business and she probably didn’t feel like opening up to a complete stranger like him, but he couldn’t just walk away now that he had seen her crying. Alex didn’t like seeing other people upset, especially cute girls who should’ve been smiling instead of wiping away tears.
“…are you okay?” Stupid question. Of course she wasn’t, if she was then she wouldn’t have been crying in the first place, he mentally berated himself, “I’m sorry, it’s probably none of my business.” He mumbled before taking a seat near her, not exactly next to her because he didn’t want her to feel like he was invading her space, “I’m Alex, by the way.”

I CAN SEE THAT YOU’VE BEEN CRYING YOU CAN’T HIDE IT WITH A LIE she paused. How was she going to explain herself? He was sweet enough, fumbling with his words in such a way that Kate was sure he was genuinely concerned about her. "I'm just a long way from home."It sounded strange to say it out loud. The words sounded almost foreign as she spoke them. The thing about the statement was that it was general enough to say that she was home sick but, wasn't too specific. She didn't want to freak the boy out with some sobbing rant about time travel and such. If anything she wanted to talk about something completely different. "I'm sorry, here I am blathering... I'm Kate." she responded, extending her dry hand out towards him. "You're a Gryffindor, aren't you? I think I've seen you around the common room and cheering at the Quidditch games."Alex was cute, there was no doubt about that and his kindness made her smile. It wasn't like she was going to suddenly lust over him but, it was just nice to meet someone who was actually concerned about how she was feeling and not like "hey sugar, you wanna snog?" or "you're from the future, right? so what happens to me?" She was sick of that. "I'm one of the chasers," she continued. "Seeing that section of red and gold during the game is the biggest confidence boost a player can get." [/ul] Notes:

Alex stretched his legs out in front of him and leaned back on his outstretched arms, rolling his head to the side so that he could get a better look at her. His bangs fell over his eyes obnoxiously and instead of brushing them away with his fingers he stared cross-eyed at the offending hair and puckered his lips together, blowing up at the strands and absently watching as they swayed upwards…and then fell right back down in place. As discreetly as he could possibly be, Alex brought his left hand up, brushing his bangs out of his eyes before repositioning his hand back in the grass to support his weight. He wasn’t all that privy on the information surrounding the ‘new students’, what he knew was from rumors that he’d heard while walking the halls and overhearing the conversations around him. But while he was incredibly curious about the mystery concerning the transfers he wasn’t about to just come out and ask her, that would have been inconsiderate and rude, especially considering the fact that she seemed so distraught. It made his heart ache, call him overly-sensitive but it was a lot easier for him to empathize with people than it was for most guys.
“So you’re homesick then?” He frowned, before shifting his gaze to the sky above, mentally picking out shapes in the clouds, “You just need to think positive—you won’t be stuck at Hogwarts forever, have fun while you’re here. Before you know it you’ll be back home with your family.” Talking about families and being home again made him wish for the winter holidays to come quicker, he missed his home, his bedroom, and his family. Just a few more weeks and he’d be home, lazily lounging in the family room or hanging out with the neighborhood boys, chasing girls and cracking jokes.
“Oh I don’t mind. I’ve been told I’m a good listener. But in my personal opinion I think you’d look a lot prettier with a smile on your face.” He meant that comment in a completely innocent way—it was his way to trying to lighten the mood and get her to turn her frown upside down. “I’m not all that into Quidditch but I go to the games to cheer on my mates. I may not understand the sport but I like to be there to support my friends who are into it.”
He furrowed his brows in contemplation, he had been wondering just where he had seen her from and now she had answered his question. His lips quirked into a friendly grin, “Oh, so that’s where I’ve seen you before. Haha, it was bothering me because I knew you looked a tad familiar but I just couldn’t place where I’d seen you…” Alex then realized that he was rambling, something that he often did that usually got on his friends nerves, so he shut his mouth for a moment before smiling, “Well, glad my cheering can contribute to the victory of our team, then!” He still didn’t really understand the appeal of the sport, but then again people had very different conceptions of what ‘fun’ was and while he may not find flying around a pitch tossing an oddly shaped ball back and forth while zooming hundreds of feet off the ground fun, she…as well as most of his friends did.
