Remus felt physically and mentally exhausted, he’d just come from a Prefect meeting that had gone way over the original allotted time, resulting in him missing lunch and while he could have easily nipped down to the Kitchens and nicked a sandwich his exhaustion made him feel a little sluggish and the last thing he felt like doing was trekking all the way to the other side of the castle to grab a bite to eat. He wasn’t terrible hungry anyhow, he could wait until dinner, it wasn’t that much of an emergency.
Shuffling across the grounds, a muggle mystery novel [courtesy of his aunt] tucked under his arm and a warm jumper clinging to his frail body, Remus settled on spending the few hours he had before dinner sitting outside and reading. He figured that he better take advantage of the available sitting space on the grass before it got blanketed with a thick layer of snow. Speaking of which, glancing up at the sky he noticed it was a cloudy grey—promising some sort of precipitation, whether it was the aforementioned snow [he sure hoped not!] or if it was a thunderstorm, he didn’t know. Remus usually read the Daily Prophet to assess what the weather for the day would be like [and to also see whether the Ministry had caught that kook calling himself the “Dark Lord” yet!], unfortunately he had woken up a tad late that morning and had to rush to make it to the Prefect meeting on time so he had missed his chance to skim through the paper. He hoped that the weather wouldn’t put a damper on his day, he just got out there and he didn’t want to have to leave so soon—Remus hoped to at least get a good hour of reading in before having to head back inside.
Plopping down on the stiff [and rather cold!] ground, Remus stretched out his legs and laid back, holding the book in the air to read it, deciding to get as comfortable as he possibly could despite the fact that he could already feel the biting chill of the air and the ground starting to claw at him.
He was being rather stubborn, denying himself the warmth of the common room for the chill of the outdoors solely because he didn’t want to deal with whatever absurdities his best mates had concocted in his absence. Was it so too much to ask for a little peace every once in a while?

Juliet sighed. Today was as boring as it was any other day. She threw down the school newspaper and scoffed. The stupid tattler. She hoped those two girls paid for what they would do in the future. It's nobody's business what others occupy their time with, or who they occupy their time with anyway. She shook her head, her blonde curls recklessly moving with her as she silently cursed the say Sirius Black and James Potter were born. They really had to both go there and get found out, didn't they. And it was stupid of James in the first place. Sure he was chasing Lily and she understood he needed love too, until he gained Lily's of course, but he had to go behind Sirius' back and do it, huh.
She walked out of the common room, pulling on a sweater as she did so. She needed a walk, and outside seemed the perfect time for it. It was just about to get ready and explode with either snow, or a fantastic thunder storm. She put a hand to her stomach. She was hungry, but not for muggle food. Usually she didn't have to eat but it was becoming a weekly thing. She sighed, her mind aching with confusion. She'd have to speak to Blodwyn about this.
She didn't know exactly where she was going, but allowed her feet to carry her. Unfortunatley, it a matter of moments, they took her to the Black Lake. She groaned inwardly, but when she saw a dark figure, she picked up. She hurried, her blonde curls getting in the way of her blue eyes. As she gained closer distance though, the dark figure registered in her mind. It was Remus. She smiled, she always found there was something odd about that boy, and it wasn't because he smelt weird a few days out of every month.
She silently took a place next to him, figuring he was reading. She sat down and started to talk. "Remus! I'm bored. You should hang out with me!" She said, a smile on her pale face. She wanted something or someone to take her mind off her hunger. She didn't know why but it always seemed she was turned off her food around him. He didn't exactly smell appealing.
She turned her blue eyed gaze to the dark waters. They looked worse now that the sun was hidden and the clouds were dark. She sighed, why must there be horrible weather. Couldn't it be nice all the time?

It didn’t take long for the numbness to set in and for him to be able to focus solely on the book in his hands, his eyes roved over the words on the page but found it increasingly difficult to concentrate on what he was reading—more than once he found himself rereading the same line over and over again. But he willed himself to continue reading, At least finish this chapter. he’d reason with himself, he really wanted to enjoy the outside while he could—before the snow came and made everything so much more miserable. Not to say that he didn’t enjoy the snow, on the contrary, he’d admit to having fun with his mates every winter; having snowball fights and just shoving each other down in snow drifts and whatnot. But at the same time he hated the cold wetness of snow and how it soaked through your clothing during that first half hour that you’d be outside playing and it was simply an uncomfortable feeling that he’d rather do without.
"Remus! I'm bored. You should hang out with me!"
He was usually quite perceptive and would have, on any other day, taken notice to the appearance of another person, especially with his heightened sense of hearing, but [he’d later reason] the cold was severely messing with his senses and making it almost impossible to discern between the crunching of leaves beneath boots and the rustling of leaves in the wind. So it went without saying that he had no idea Juliet was there until she plopped down beside him and spoke loudly—which, given that he wasn’t expecting anyone to join him, startled him to the point that he let out a surprised cry and jumped into a sitting position.
“Oh, Juliet!” He laughed, somewhat out of breath and trying to will his heart to stop hammering against his ribcage, “You scared me, haha! So much so I pooted!” He placed the bookmark that he’d been using between the creases of the pages that he was currently on and set the book beside him on the crunchy grass, leaning back on his arms and sitting with his legs stretched out in front of him, “Alright, I could do with some company.” A friendly smile painted his lips, “Did you want to do anything in particular?”

Juliet looked over the Black Lake. It was pretty. She enjoyed her time with Remus. When he was singled out, he was quite the gentleman. She liked Remus more than the other Marauders. She got butterflies sometimes, but she always shoved it off. It wasn't her style. She looked at the book he was reading before he put it down. It was thick, typical of him. She guessed he called it light reading. She learned not to occupy her time with that many books.
She smiled at him and let out a soft giggle. She often scared people, but she kept that to herself. She knew one day she would like to settle down. She had once before, but outlived her lover to the extent she was his daughter outside of their home. She sighed inwardly, but kept the smile on her face. She put one of her pale fingers to her chin in thought and let out a 'hmm' sound.
"Ha! You were gonna be stuck with me either way." She nudged him and smiled, her pearly white teeth showing. These were the one thing on her body she took care of as if it were life and death, when really, it was. "I actually didn't think that far ahead. You know. Oh! Did you read the School Paper today? Lily's gotten herself in a right mess, she has!" Juliet exclaimed. Her eyebrows were arched in surprise. She never took Lily for that kind of girl, especially with Snape.
She picked her legs up and tucked them to her body for warmth. Of course it didn't effect her, but it was an automatic response. "Well you know, we could go for a walk, play a game or something along those lines..." Her voice was unsure and she felt silly for even mentioning something like that. She wasn't much help, but at least she tried...

Remus liked to think that he was fairly easy to get along with, he had a decent amount of friends and he considered Juliet to be one of them—she was a nice girl, always knew how to have fun and her company was a refreshing change from the boisterous and mischievous group that he was used to. He chuckled, turning his body so that he was partially facing her now, “Oh? Are you saying that I don’t have a choice in the matter, then? Are you holding me hostage?”
He sat up a bit straighter at the mention of the article in that morning’s paper and he couldn’t help but to suppress the groan that threatened to spill from his lips—not at Juliet, but at the thought of that stupid article. Lily wasn’t the only one who had been mentioned either, there had been another one that his two best mates had both been mentioned in and honestly? He thought it was a bit childish of whoever it was that had written up the Tattler, going around and snooping in other people’s business and then writing about it for the entire school to see—how immature was that? Maybe he was just feeling a tad defensive because he had a secret that he needed to keep protected, his breath hitched in his throat at the mere thought of someone catching him at the wrong moment and then exposing what he was to the school. No, no, no. He couldn’t let that happen. He’d have to play it safe and be much more careful from now on…
“Yeah I saw it. I mean, I don’t exactly support her choice of snogging partner but I’m sure it devastated her to read that in the paper. It was probably something that she wanted to keep a secret.” He frowned, “Whoever wrote that paper in incredibly immature for going around and revealing the secrets of others to the school.
[/b]” He wouldn’t lie and say that he wasn’t surprised, because honestly? He found it utterly disturbing to know that Lily Evans and Sniv— Severus Snape had locked lips, though maybe he was just severely biased because he and his mates spent their previous years [and current one!] pranking the slimy git. He knew she was trying which was more than what he could say for himself in the department of figuring out something that they could do. “ Hmm, a walk sounds nice—it’s a bit nippy out so maybe getting our blood pumping will warm us up, yeah?” Remus pushed himself off of the ground and stood, absently brushing off the debris that clung to the back of his jumper and trousers before holding out a hand to Juliet to help her up. A small smiled painted itself upon the bouncy blondes lips. Juliet was happy to be here with him, he just always set her at ease. It was as if the Vampire side of her went away. He did smell funny though. It was oddly familiar but she couldn't quite put her finger upon it. She let out a small giggle when he asked if she was holding him hostage. She nodded, her hair flowing with every movement she made. "Now that you mention it, I am. This means you have to spend the whole afternoon with me, not matter what!" She said this, the smile never leaving her face.
Juliet eyes gazed downward. She didn't mean to mention it, and she despised the girls as much as anyone, but still, Lily should not have broken poor James' heart. He didn't look the same after the article was read. "I know what you mean. People have secrets for a reason, it may not only hurt the individual, but it may hurt others as well. And all we want is to protect people..." She said this as she was deep in thought. She didn't want anyone to discover her own secret. That would kill her, perhaps even literally.
She smiled when the subject was changed and before she knew it, Remus was holding his hand out towards her. She hesitated a moment before placing her hand in his. She refrained from touching people often, only due to her cold skin, but as she placed it in his, she noticed the warmth. She smiled and allowed him to help her up, brushing off any dirt and grass that may have stuck to her. "A walk sounds wonderful, especially before the snow sets in. We should get it while we can." Her eyes glimmered as she thought about the white blanket that would consume them in a matter of weeks.
A small sigh escaped her lips. as she began to walk. she almost forgot her hand was in his before she pulled in out quickly. She didn't want anybody to make this into a bigger story than it really was. She smiled at him before she turned her head to face him. He was tall, taller than her with sandy brown hair. He was quite a looker, but the scars on his face were noticeable. She had to do a double take before realizing they were so faint that only she could pick them up using her heightened vision. It did come in handy.
She reached up and traced a long one that escalated down his cheek. She didn't mean to touch him, but a look of concern crossed her face and she couldn't help it. What had possibly caused such scarring, whether it be faint or not... She quickly took her hand away and smiled at him. She didn't want to make him uncomfortable.
She looked back at them once more, her features showing that she was trying to put the pieces together in this incredibly hard puzzle. She finally spoke up. "Remus. What could have caused this?" Her voice was concerned, like a mother over her only son.
She shook her head, almost permitting him to stay silent. She didn't want to ruin this walk with talk like this, after all, it was nice to be alone with him. And by alone, she meant without James and Sirius... and that Peter fellow who was always following them around.
"Look at me. I'm sorry, I'm not trying to ruin this walk. I'm enjoying it. I just worry about you sometimes. Some days you don't seem to venture out much and a few new scars appear and...." Her voice trailed off, her mind fitting each piece together. It couldn't be could it? She shook her head, not believing her own thoughts. She smiled up at him before shoving her thoughts away. "Are you finding potions harder this year? I'm not sure if it's just Slughorn or my brain withering away but I could not get this stupid love potion..." She said this, her blue eyes sincere with doubt. She couldn't shake her thoughts though. Everything seemed to fit....

Remus found himself grinning at her enthusiasm, her spirited mood seemed contagious because he couldn’t help but to chuckle at her behavior and even felt himself feel loads better than he had before she had shown up. “I think that can be arranged.” He laughed, “Alright, the rest of the afternoon is yours. I pinky promise.” He wasn’t sure if she knew about the silly childish notion of linking pinky fingers to show that you meant a promise or not, and after he had said it he felt incredibly foolish. But he decided not to harp on it for long, it was silly.
He noticed the change in her demeanor when they spoke about that stupid article and it made him proud of her, at least she had enough sense to realize that what was written in that stupid gossip column was wrong and way too intrusive. Unfortunately, half the student population at Hogwarts ate up gossip like an extra helping of Christmas pudding which meant that The Tattler probably wouldn’t be disappearing any time soon. With so many fans it was sure to stay around for a while. It was a selfish though, but, since he was quite popular it was only a matter of time before there was some sort of article written about him in that silly magazine. For the most part his record was pretty clean, with the exception of the pranks he and his mates pulled, but other than that he made sure to never let himself get thrust into compromising situations that could put his reputation [you know, the ‘polite’ and ‘nice young man’ one] in jeopardy. Remus didn’t want people to assume that just because he was best mates with James and Sirius that he was just like them because he wasn’t, he was a tad more mature and responsible than they were. But if the author of that gossip column started snooping around him and his friends a bit more closely he was afraid that he or she would find something out that he desperately wished to keep secret—more specifically his lycanthropy. That would have been a complete and utter disaster! He’d have to leave school! No one would ever look at him the same way! Just thinking about the consequences of the revelation of his condition was enough to give him a panic attack.
“I agree. People keep secrets for a reason, if they wanted others to know the personal details of their lives then they wouldn’t be secrets, now would they?” It was a rhetorical question, one that he didn’t expect an answer to. He remembered seeing Prongs’ face after he read that article about Evans and Snape—he seemed so heartbroken and the effects of the his best mate’s despair seemed contagious because in turn it made Remus feel devastated as well.
Her fingers brushed over his and he noticed the chill of her skin but chalked it up to the coolness of the air around them. He quickly pulled her to her feet, making sure that she was steady, hardly even noticing that her hand was still in his due to the fact that his fingers had gone numb from the added chill of the cold weather and her cool fingers. When he got back to the dorm later on he’d need to dig his gloves out of his trunk so that they’d be out and ready for the next time he decided to go out. Nodding his head in agreement, he laughed, “Though I’m certain that once the snow sets in Sirius and James’ll have me out here regardless.” He then paused and added as an afterthought to clarify what he meant, “They like to come out and have snowball wars, though I’m convinced that they cheat.” Feeling her fingers slip out of his he let out a small, faint gasp of surprise—had they been holding hands this whole time? He hadn’t even noticed! Remus cast a quick glance at her from the corner of his eye, hoping that she wasn’t sending him some dirty look and thinking that he was trying to come on to her or something equally as absurd. She was a very good friend of his and he definitely didn’t want her to think that he wanted to jump her bones or something, no, that was more of Sirius’ game, not his.
The blond had been so lost in his own thoughts that he hadn’t noticed her stop walking and lean towards him until he felt her fingers tracing a line down his cheek. He mentally panicked when he realized that she had found one of his many scars and it made him feel incredibly insecure and exposed. Saliva pooled in his mouth out of nervousness and he quickly swallowed it, wishing for the unease he suddenly felt to ebb away. “I…” How could he possibly explain the scarring to her? The ones on his face were incredibly faint, not many people had ever even noticed them before—his best mates, sure, but they had heightened senses from being animagi…so what was her excuse?
She quickly changed the subject after what felt like an intensely long and uncomfortable silence on his end and he had almost been certain that she had figured out his secret. But instead, she began asking him some trivial question about potions, which he was grateful for, but his heart was still hammering against his ribcage so hard and fast that he was almost positive that she’d be able to hear it!
“Huh? Oh, right.” Remus smiled sheepishly, “Well I can’t say that it’s my favorite subject, but I’m not doing poorly. If you need any help don’t hesitate to ask. I mean, I’m not a potions master by anyone’s standard, but I understand what we’re doing for the most part. Though that’s no thanks to Slughorn, no offense to him but he’s not exactly the greatest professor there is—he’s terrible at explaining things.” He allowed himself to laugh at the end, just thinking about the awkward professor was enough to illicit such a reaction.

Juliet was quite happy to be in his company. It was always different being with him. He seemed much more mature that James and Sirius. He was much older than he ought to be. She let out a giggle when he mentioned the pinky promise. It was such a childish thing she remembered when she was a child and used to do it with her sister. She had never heard it then on. She felt a tear prick her eyes, but never let them be noticed, instead, she wrapped her pinky around his and looked him straight in the eye. "You know, we always have to seal the deal..." She said this, a smirk arising to her pink lips. As she shook her pinky with his, she let their fingers slide away from each other. She was touching him more than she should.
She put one foot directly in front of the other, as if she were walking on a tight rope from the circus, performing for hundreds of fans. She smiled, before losing balance and stepping off her imaginary line, giggling. "I guess I suck at balance. How ironic..." She said the last part quietly. How she felt some things about her didn't match. Juliet began to think about secrets. Why was the world so prejudice? Everybody still had the same heart. Well, her's didn't beat, she doubted she even had one, but she was still like a normal witch. "I guess the world is twisted. Every bodies heart still beats the same..." Her voice was confident, but she felt the complete opposite. What if they were to find out what she was? What she is? What she will always be?
Juliet bent over, picking some of the fallen leaves, throwing them above her head. She giggled before she turned to him, the bounce in her step stopping. "I love the snow. Can't you of all people charm the game your playing or something? To stop them cheating? You know how they love to win, and will do everything necessary." Her voice was cheery and she gave him a look that said 'you know your smarter than them so prove it'.
She started walking once again, her thoughts never leaving her alone. She didn't want to accuse him of anything, but she noticed that his whole body's demeanor change when she mentioned her observations. She hated making him uncomfortable, but she knew before long, her curiosity would get the better of her. She'd just leave it until they were more private.
She smiled, actually jumping inside when he told her he could help her with the potion. And any work she needed help with for that matter. Laughing at his comment about Slughorn, she agreed. "I would really like that! I mean, he sort of blabbers on, gets half way through a sentence and basically tells you everything is okay before starting the next sentence." He blue eyes danced in happiness, and when she noticed they reach a secluded spot near the lake, away from open ears, she turned to him.
"Your different, Remus. It's okay. I'm different too..." She said this, giving him a 'i know but i like you for it...' look, hoping he would give into her bluff. She didn't know if she was right or wrong but she hoped he would confirm her suspicions...

He chuckled, glad that she at least humored him and his childish notion of promising something through the linking of pinky fingers. Maybe he wasn’t the only one who still clung to silly childhood memories such as that one, though he’d never willingly admit it aloud, but he did sort of miss the days where his only worry was what game he was going to play with the other kids in the neighborhood. Though…those days of his childhood hadn’t lasted terribly long before he soon had to worry about transforming into a hideous monster once a month. It was an incredibly traumatizing experience, especially for someone as young as he had been when he was first bitten and it wasn’t a particular memory that he was fond of reminiscing.
Remus tilted his head to the side, his heightened hearing picking up on the comment that she had mumbled under her breath and he wasn’t sure whether it was meant for him, or if she was just musing aloud so he decided not to ask her about it. Though, he vaguely wondered why she found her lack of balance to be ironic, lots of people were clumsy and there was nothing wrong with that.
His lips twitched into a small smile and he inclined his head, nodding, “You’re right. I don’t understand why some people are so judgmental, we’ve all got the same biological makeup, for the most part. Someone may be different on the outside, but we’re all the same on the inside.” In his opinion, he believed that the world would be a far better place if everyone were more tolerant and accepting of one another. Though, of course, that wasn’t the case in the real world which was why he had to take extra precautions to hide who and what he truly was. It was a sad existence, but thankfully he had his friends to get him through it.
The young Gryffindor couldn’t stop the smile that painted his lips, his eyes crinkling at the corner in amusement at Juliet’s innocent behavior of tossing the leaves into the air and twirling beneath them. “Haha, I suppose you’re right. I should set some sort of limit to our games, make it so they can’t cheat. Those two like to gang up on me and I don’t find that very fair, how about you? I mean, Wor—Peter’s usually on my team, but he’s not really much help.” He frowned, remembering the last time it had snowed and Pads and Prongs had singled him out, pelting him mercilessly with snowballs while Peter hid behind a snow drift to escape sharing the same fate as Remus. Yeah, some help Wormtail was…
“Ugh, tell me about it! That man is completely nutters! Half the time I feel like even he doesn’t know what he’s talking about!”
When they stopped walking, he was mildly surprised when she turned to face him, they were now tucked away in a secluded area of the lake and he wasn’t quite sure what she was doing, he found that she was a little difficult to read, emotion-wise, at the moment and that made him feel a little uneasy [especially since she had come so close to figuring out his secret just moments before!]
“I—uh—what?” He spluttered before laughing nervously, “Well, everyone’s different in their own ways. No two people are the same, if you really think about it. We’ve all got different interests and goals in life.” Remus didn’t like where this was going, he was a little afraid that she had figured everything out already and that was the purpose for them, subconsciously, being alone in such an isolated part of the lake, so that she could confront him about it…

The one thing Juliet didn't care about when she was around Remus was the fact she didn't have to hide the way she was, any childish antics that plagued her mind were openly released when he was around, everything seemed to fit together nicely.
She looked around, her mind was travelling a million miles a second, just about everything. Sure, she didn't start here in her first year, people would be suspicious if she were to look the same as she did when she arrived in her first year... She shook her head, it was just, Remus didn't look to be the type of person with a secret like that, he was too sweet and innocent to be classed as a monster...
Juliet frowned at her thoughts, it was starting to make her head hurt. "Werewolves and Vampires and all that aren't the real monsters out there you know... I class it mostly as the Slytherins, especially Bellatrix and Lucius, even they make my heart beat a million times per minute, or stand still, I don't know what is classed worse..." She smiled at her words, she didn't exactly have a heart, a heart that beat anyway... She was dead after all.
She smiled at him. "I think you should let me play next time. I am a force to be reckoned with... I think I can take on Sirius..." She said this a glimmer in her eye. They were both Beaters, so she thought that beating Sirius may prove she was a better beater, then he would never live the fact a girl beat him, ability or not...
She thought about everything right now, finding a fallen hollow tree trunk, and sitting upon it, ushering Remus over so they could continue. Rolling her eyes, she smiled at him. He wasn't going to admit it, and he looked quite nervous, which was a tell tail sign. She didn't want to make him feel uncomfortable, but... "Remus! For someone who is so
[/i] intelligent, I thought you would be the one to figure me out before I figured you out... I'll give you three hints.... One. I have cold skin, and it ain't cause of the cold weather... Two. I am a beater that could give Sirius a run for his money... Three. I can see the scars i'm guessing not even your friends could see..."[/color] She said this, her voice was blunt, but quiet. She couldn't believe it, he overlooked things sometimes... She smiled, leaning closer so she could whisper into his ear. Your a Werewolf! One last hint... My natural enemy..." Her voice was soothing, as if they weren't having this sort of conversation at all. She hoped he wasn't uncomfortable. She wanted him to figure her secret out, without her telling him. She sat there, hoping he would realize it by now. She guessed he had never actually met one before, since they sort of stayed hidden and away from Werewolves, whether it be a full moon or not, they were still dangerous to Vampires just like Vampires were dangerous to them. They were each others Kryptonite as such... Did he know that? Did he read up on his condition to know who his mortal enemies were and how to recognize them? These were all questions she was wanting to ask, but that would come later, she just wanted to get this part out of the way first...
