FACE: The most prominent feature on Snape's face is the large nose inherited from his father and an almost ever present dark, moody look in his eye.
STYLE: If he isn't wearing his Slytherin robes--or Death Eater ones--he can be found in Muggle clothing, typically hand me downs from his father that have only in the last two years begun fitting him properly.

OVERVIEW: Severus' childhood began in solitude and sorrow. Yes, sorrow even for a boy as young as him. His father's drunken rages began funnelling into Severus as soon as his firs sign of accidental magic, and that had a horrific effect on his growth. He became reclusive and passive-aggressive because of his father's brutal behavior, finding comfort in no friends and only in the study of magic. His mother never practiced magic anymore, but Severus did, and came to revere it and put himself above his father because of it.
A bit of his bitterness did begin to dissipate when he met Lily Evans. She was such a kind and innocent girl who seemed to bring a light to the darkness he lived in for the first several years of his life. She was perfect to him in every way--beautiful, kind, strong--and he immediately took to spending as much time with her as possible and away from his home. In her he finally had someone to share magic with, to tell about the wonderful world he'd already learned so much about. However, any positive change she'd ever made in him did not show around others.
Around others, in school particularly, he has always been moody and distrustful, preferring the outskirts of people's attention to the center of it. His goal was to go through Hogwarts uninterrupted and unnoticed to everyone but Lily. He wanted only to learn what he must, prove his skill in what he knew, and leave in seven years--not only Hogwarts but his wretched family home as well.
Severus' appearance is directly related to his desire to go unnoticed. His clothing outside of class time is always unassuming and plain, old tshirts and jeans or casual dress clothing from his father's old closet. And as if that was not enough for him to assure his invisibility, he would keep his long hair over his eyes quite a lot, observing through dark locks rather than interacting. From there he could safely make judgments, assessments, and decisions; he had no desire to make connections with others outside of Lily Evans, the girl he'd shared the world of magic with, or his own personal gain.[/SIZE]

OVERVIEW: Severus Tobias Snape, born in the middle of winter, January ninth nineteen sixty. His parents, Eileen and Tobias Snape were happy then, he heard. Proud of their child in madly in love with one another: apparently it wasn't until their child, Severus, had been with them for several months that his mother finally revealed that she was a witch. A poor choice no doubt, and the results became clear in the years that followed. It was then that Tobias became abusive and began drinking heavily, treating his wife like the liar he felt she was, the dirt underneath his shoe for the magic he was so frightened and jealous of. He never kept jobs and his family lived in fear of him: that was Severus' home.
Things never changed there, but on the outside, the refuge away from his father's hate and his mother's steady emotional degradation, something did change for him. And it was for the better. He spent most of his childhood years in solitude, preferring to sneak off and read the books his mother had on the Wizarding World, nicking her wand and practicing magic when they were asleep or away (she was too afraid to use it now, anyway). And although he went outside daily, avoiding his house in the daylight hours before he was expected to return home at nightfall, he never saw her until he was older. He didn't question it, either, why he had not seen her for so long. Perhaps it was because she was so absolutely mesmerizing to his young mind.
Lily Evans.
She was the sweetest and kindest person he had ever met. Her sister he could do without, but Lily would not stay out of his mind. So instead of ignoring this new emotion, he followed it, seeking her company daily and telling her all he could about the world they shared. For her he could bring new knowledge of the world she belonged to because of her magic, and for him she brought a new idea of how people could interact, through kindness and care and not hatred and pain. It was a hard pill to swallow, and he never really understood it properly, but she was still a gateway to another way of life to him, the possibility that he could hope for a normal life.
That all changed at Hogwarts. Suddenly he was at odds between the people he was supposed to find a surrogate family in and the girl he loved so much. On one hand there was Lily, never quite understanding or caring to understand everything that he did--why he associated with the people he did, why he practiced Dark Magic, but still the girl who held his heart in her hands. On the other, he had people who offered him their protection from Potter in exchange for sharing his skills in Dark Magic, and he knew early on he would need protection. Potter and his friends had taken an immediate interest in antagonizing him, and with such a poor past, a spotty manner in responding to such treatment. He was so used to being a victim, lashing out when it became to much but otherwise accepting the abuse dealt, that he knew no other way to react to the 'Marauders' as they quickly dubbed themselves. Still, unaccepting as she could be, he did have Lily. For a time.
Years into their schooling at Hogwarts, during their OWL examinations, he lost that very thing that kept him from sinking entirely into his world of darkness. It became apparent, though there was nothing he could do about it, that his Slytherin counterparts only offered their protection when they saw fit to do so--which was next to never because of his association with Lily--and that the Marauders would never allow their desire to make Severus miserable go even for examinations. Words were exchanged, gestures made... and Severus, well, he was wounded beyond measure. And he had to let her feel the pain he did: it wasn't just the smile she tried to force back, but the years of distrust that he'd always let roll off his shoulders.
He had always tried to tell her about the Marauders, what the really did to him behind closed doors and outside of the watchful eyes of their professors, but despite every truth he had ever told her as children, she did not believe him. She accused and assumed only because of the people he had been Sorted with. He knew things would be difficult when they were separated during their first feast at Hogwarts, but he had never expected her to push him away so. Well, if that was what she wanted so dearly he would finally push back.
He never expected the misery that would follow. The last summer was impossible to bear. He had no one but his parents and the occasional visit from Lucius Malfoy, who had finally convinced him to take the Mark of the Dark Lord who was gaining power so quickly. It was a decision made in anger and heartache, one he regretted more and more as the days went by, but there was nothing for it. Lily would never have him, so happy with her assumptions and delusions, and he... he was meant only to be swallowed up in darkness. [/SIZE]
